Community involvement helps student prepare for her future

12th grade student Violet Scardina has big goals in her life, and an online education is helping her prepare for her future.

In her 8th year at The Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School, Violet has her sights set on joining the Navy, a goal that came from watching a family member retire after 32 years in the Army.

“I want to join the military to serve others, to support other people, and build up myself and the people around me,” Violet said.

She also wants to pursue an accounting degree once her active service is over.

A special trip to D.C.

Violet’s getting a head start on the leadership skills she’ll need in the military by being active in her community. She participated in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, an all-expenses paid weeklong trip to Washington, D.C. Central Electric, Violet’s community electric co-op, chose her to represent her community.

During the trip, students visit several Smithsonian museums and the U.S. Capitol. They also have the opportunity to meet with their representatives and senators.

Violet’s not the first person in her family to attend the Youth Tour; her mother and several of her older siblings have gone on the trip.

Learning to be a leader

The special trip to D.C. paired well with Violet’s participation in the Butler County Youth Leadership Program. There, Violet met other students from across Butler County, and took classes in leadership, entrepreneurship, and mentorship.

“We spoke with local business owners, like the owner of a local coffeehouse,” Violet explained. “We got to learn his story and how he got to own his shop, and how important his family is to him. That resonated because family is a big thing for me.”

Community involvement

Violet is active in her church community. She’s involved in youth group, and takes pride in encouraging students to get involved in activities.

“If I see other people who aren’t really doing as much, then I need to be the voice that people hear to know they should be going out and doing more,” Violet said about how she shows leadership skills.
